Sometimes, all it takes is a helping hand given at the right moment. One semester can make the difference between a student continuing and eventually finishing his studies at UP, or stopping his schooling in order to work. The trouble with the latter is that they rarely get the chance to complete them.

It is because of this that our NGO, Ex Libris Philippines, organized our "Concert For A Cause" fundraising activity last May 21, 2010. We're now looking for beneficiaries for our scholarship project. We seek undergraduate students who need financial assistance to continue their studies at the University of the Philippines for the first semester of A.Y. '10-'11. (Partial and complete scholarship grants for one semester will be granted based on the applicant's need)

Do you know of any deserving U.P. student of good moral and intellectual standing (preferably no INC's or 5's, with a GWA of 2.00 or higher), who REALLY NEEDS this one semester tuition fee grant? One more month til Concert!

Only a month away! How time flies. I'm inviting everyone to see our Concert for a Cause, which is going to be very good for the ears! Trust me! :D

What's more, by watching our concert, you not only get to listen to good music (Broadway, Filipino love songs, and Classical music!) but you also help send students to school. Think about that person (or people!!) whose life you can change. :)

It's going to be a rare treat--rare because when you say "entertainment" nowadays you get movies, video games and the like--for families and friends. So, come and invite yours!

This year's fundraising project is a Concert for a Cause, with performances by professors, students and alumni of the UP College of Music. All funds to be raised will go to the Scholarship Project. The concert will be on May 21, 2010, Friday, 6 p.m. at the UP College of Music, Nicanor Abelardo Hall.

Treat yourself to a night of music and magic, and help out in a good cause, too! You'll be helping send students to school. Please also help spread the word to your friends and family, and invite them to come as well!

More glasses/Dressing with confidence

Recently discovered this geeky-chic collection by Luella, because this little stylish bunneh seems to have just recently discovered it also. And coolness is infectious.


For once, huge retro glasses are so cute!

But shallow ravings aside, this has given me some more ideas on dressing, particularly dressing without showing anything that is not meant to be shown. After all, women should pay close attention to what they wear: it defines how men (or everyone around for that matter) will eventually treat them.

That said, I recall a conversation I had with my boss (and friend) Diana--I was thinking too much about dressing to look good/smart/serious for others (so that you attract the people you want to meet) that I forgot the most basic thing, which of course Diana pointed out to me. "You dress for yourself!"

Of course! Before anyone else, one should dress to please oneself. That includes choosing the clothes that reflect your own self-respect. What you want to do is highlight your face--and not any other part of the body--because your face represents you (your whole person-hood) best.

I recall this now because it came up again in an Ex Libris Philippines book session, which happened to be an all-girls' night...just last night actually. We were talking about how, if you are not-so-pretty, you would have an easier time with love because you're sure the guy loves you for who you are, and not for any "prize" you might be able to offer them (provided, of course, that you do find a guy!).

But maybe pretty girls will have it easy too, if they know how to not-show-off....

We had a little discussion on dressing up too: when you get a boyfriend, would you have to keep dressing up for him?

Why, of course not. In the end, the only one to really please is yourself. You dress to look good, feel good, and be at ease about who you really are.

Congratulations to Ex Libris Philippines Scholars!

For the first semester AY2008-2009, Ex Libris Philippines, a non-stock, non-profit organization of book lovers and enthusiasts, sent 5 scholars to school. These scholars are UP students who need and deserve the award.

Last June 5, the heads of our scholarship committee, Tata Francisco and Gabi Francisco, awarded the hardworking students with PhP 7,000.oo, which covers tuition and lab fees for one whole semester.

Our NGO, Ex Libris Philippines, has raised some money from our "Opera For A Cause: Don Pasquale" fundraising activity last April 4, 2008 and we're looking for beneficiaries for our scholarship project. One more day!

Don Pasquale is a classic opera by Donizetti, and this production is a Filipinized version in terms of set, actors/singers and costume design. Of course, the words are still in Italian...so that's good for the language students!

Saw the first showing of this opera last week--for the final thesis production of my friend Gabi Francisco (the lady in red above)--and the voices were really great! I could close my eyes and listen, but I would miss the actions! Even if I didn't understand Italian, I understood the story through the gestures--proving that action is a language all on its own.

I'm no music major so forgive my lack of musical knowledge; but I write. From what little Italian I know, I think Donizetti as writer can be funny, using puns for names like Etcetera (the pastor who married Don Pasquale and Norina) and Malatesta (the doctor with the crazy idea). (I'm sure it would be whooping fun if I knew Italian.) Maybe if a Filipino poet and composer would adapt this opera in our beautiful language, it would gain a bigger audience--it's got the comedy we all love, mixed with a refreshingly classical style in music that is always buona for the testa.

Our NGO, Ex Libris Philippines, a nonstock, nonprofit, SEC-certified organization for book enthusiasts, is raising funds in order to help send UP students to school. Last March 7, 2007, our NGO held a special screening of the movie "300" in Rockwell Powerplant, and the funds from this movie screening sent two UP students (Gerico Punzalan of CAL and Hanna Garcia of Industrial Engineering) to school.

As this year's fundraising activity for our NGO's Scholarship Project, we are holding an opera production of "Don Pasquale", with a cast of UP College of Music voice majors and UP alumni.

All the funds to be raised from ticket sales will go to the Ex Libris Philippines Scholarship Fund and help send UP students to school.
